Professor Peter G. Schultz from The Scripps Research Institute Visited IBP and Delivered a BeiShizhang Lecture
On December 13th, 2017, Professor Peter G. Schultz, a member of US National Academy of Sciences, from The Scripps Research Institute visited IBP gave a BeiShizhang lecture entitled “Synthesis at the interface of chemistry and biology: From molecules to Medicine and Materials”. Researchers and graduate students from both inside and outside of IBP attended in this seminar.
ProfessorPeter G. Schultz is currently the Scripps Family Professor of Chemistry. He founded and was the Institute Director of the Genomics Institute of the Novartis Research Foundation (GNF) in San Diego, CA from 1999 to 2010 and more recently (2012) the California Institute for Biomedical Research (CALIBR), a not-for-profit institute focused on early stage translational research. Professor Peter G. Schultz mainly engaged in the research work in the cross field of chemistry and biology, to promote the creation of new biological and physical properties by developing innovative technologies for molecules and materials.In addition, Schultz is a founder of Affymax Research Institute, Syrrx, Kalypsys, Phenomix, Symyx Therapeutics, Ilypsa, Ambrx, Ardelyx, and Wildcat Technologies, pioneers in the application of diversity based approaches to problems in chemistry, materials science and medicine.
In the speech, Prof. Peter G. Schultz mainly introduced how to combine biological mechanisms, biomolecules and biological strategies with chemical tools and principles to create new functional molecules and molecular systems. Prof. Peter G. Schultz has made a detailed introduction to the research progress of his research group in the development of new molecular ciphers in synthetic biology and the two aspects of the use of chemical small molecules to induce stem cell fate.
Prof. Peter G. Schultz’s talk was received with great enthusiasm. Many researchers and students participated in active exchanges with Professor Peter G. Schultz after his talk.Then Professor Peter G. Schultz and graduate students talked actively at lunch.
