4th Sino-German Symposium on Protein Folding, Redox Regulation and Quality Control

Updated: 2017-10-24

Protein folding, post-translational modification and quality control are important themes of scientific enquiry within the field of protein science. Since 2005, a series of joint-symposia on this topic has been held in the CAS Institute of Biophysics (IBP), organized by Prof. Chih-chen Wang and Prof. Sarah Perrett from IBP, together with Prof. Johannes Buchner from the Technical University of Munich (TUM) Germany. The “4th Sino-German Symposium on Protein Folding, Redox Regulation and Quality Control” was held from 18th to 19th October 2017. Organized by Prof. Chih-chen Wang, Prof. Chang Chen and Prof. Sarah Perrett, this meeting was attended by more than 80 people, including 21 researchers and students from nine research groups at TUM. These included Prof. Johannes Buchner, a renowned scientist in the field of protein folding and molecular chaperones, who was elected an EMBO member in 2014, and who has had close collaborative relationships with the groups of Prof. Chih-chen Wang and Sarah Perrett for many years. Other speakers included researchers in the protein quality control field from TUM, IBP, the CAS Shanghai Institutes of Biological Sciences, the CAS Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, Peking University, and the California Institute of Technology, USA.

The Director of the National Laboratory of Biomacromolecules, Prof. Ruiming Xu, opened the meeting with welcoming remarks. The 25 talks during the meeting addressed topics including protein folding, quality control and mechanisms of chaperone regulation; redox homeostasis and redox modifications of proteins; structure and function of membrane proteins; single molecule detection; and unnatural amino acid labeling techniques. Speakers included nine graduate students from different laboratories, encouraging involvement of the next generation of scientists. Each talk was following by a lively time of questions and discussion. Prof. Johannes Buchner and Prof. Chih-chen Wang provided the closing remarks. During the course of the meeting, there were many opportunities for interaction, and several new collaborations were established.

The symposium received financial support from the National Laboratory of Biomacromolecules, and participants of the National Key Research Plan Program Grant “Redox Regulation of Protein Homeostasis” played an active role in its organization.
