Prof. Peter J. Peters from Maastricht University of the Netherlands made a BEI Shizhang Lecture

Updated: 2016-07-07

On June 30, 2016, Dr. Peter J. Peters from Maastricht University of the Netherlands visited IBP, attended 2016 Kuo Symposium on 3D Cryo-EM Molecular Imaging and gave a lecture entitled “A revolution in cryo-EM: beauty and benefits of nanobiology in life science”, which was hosted by Prof. XU Tao and SUN Fei.

Peter Peters obtained his PhD in 1991 from Utrecht University, where he co-developed the cryo-immunogold EM method. In 1998, Peters was appointed as professor at the Netherlands Cancer Institute in Amsterdam. Additionally he initiated and coordinated the ‘Netherlands Centre for Nanoscopy (NECEN). In 2014, he was appointed as distinguished professor at Maastricht University, where he co-directed the Maastricht MultiModal Molecular Imaging Institute (M4I). His team is studying the near-atomic structure of the type VII secretion system using single-particle cryo-EM and cryo-electron tomography. For this, they are co-developing high precision, cryo-focused ion beam sample preparation guided by correlative cryo-fluorescence microscopy. His team also is developing the next-generation Vitrobot.

On June 26, Peter J. Peters visited the Bio-imaging center. Prof. Fei Sun introduced the instruments and technology development of the center. They were very interested in the cooperation on correlative light microscopy and electron microscopy and cryo-sample preparation between two institutions. They hope contribute to the field of bio-imaging technology together in the future.

On the lecture, Prof. Peters shared the experience of immuno-labeling for EM as one of the founders of this method; talked about electron microscopy three dimensional reconstruction technology based on cryo-light microscopy and focused ion beam techniqueintroduced the developing of the next-generation Vitrobot in his lab which would be better for biological samples preparation.

The audience posed many interesting questions after the lecture especially about the new developing instrument. Peters also talked to Ph.D students and gave suggestions about the science career.
