IBP Holds 2020 Annual Public Science Day on the Cloud
On May 23, the Institute of Biophysics (IBP) at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), in a joint effort with the Biophysical Society of China, hosted the 2020 Public Science Day in Beijing. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the annual event was held online for the first time in its 17-year history. About 10,000 viewers were attracted to the special physics party “on the cloud”.
This year’s theme was to make science education fun by adding elements of popular reality shows. Two visitors who are not in the line of business of biophysics were invited to visit the experimental center, the pathological analysis center, the fluorescence imaging center, and the nano-enzyme engineering laboratory, where, under instruction of staff, they had some hands-on experience of a biophysics experiment by shaving mice and preparing specimens themselves. The visitors also shared a great time with the online audience through fun science games.
Additionally, four young scientists in different sub-areas of biophysics joined the talk session which was live-broadcast. They shared their views on certain stereotypes and topics like cells, cognitive science and nano-enzymes.
This annual event offers a channel for the public to learn more about the sciences, expand their understanding of biophysics, and communicate with the scientists. A live broadcast was made on the four platforms of Bilibili, Xigua, TikTok, and Zhihu. Over 350,000 joined the three-hour live broadcast and left over 3,000 comments.
