Updated: 2019-11-08

On November 6, 2019, Professor Colin L. Masters from the University of Melbourne, Australia, visited the Institute of Biophysics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and gave a lecture entitled "The Molecular Origins of Alzheimer's Disease: When Does It Start and What Strategies for Primary Prevention?" Professor Masters made the visit at the invitation of researcher Zhu Li of the institute's National Key Laboratory of Brain and Cognitive Science.
Professor Masters is an academician of the Australian Academy of Sciences and is currently an honorary professor of the Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health. He has been engaged in the research of Alzheimer ’s disease, or AD, for 50 years. He and a colleague were the first to find amyloid deposits in AD patients that form brain plaque, or Aβ. They have long been dedicated to the pre-clinical diagnosis and prevention of AD.

Professor Colin Masters speaks on Nov 6, 2019.

Professor Masters introduced the two types and pathogeny of AD. One is the early-onset AD with an average onset age of 45 years, which is an autosomal dominant inherited disease. The other is the late-onset AD with an average onset age of 78 years old. He analyzed the possibility of pre-clinical diagnosis for AD and also pointed out that clinical real-time quantitative drug efficacy testing still needs more research. He also introduced the research direction with the greatest potential for treating AD.
