Author: Update time: 2010-05-12

Two renowned scientists from Johns Hopkins University—Prof. Craig Montell and Prof. Denise Montell visited the Institute of Biophysics and delivered two scheduled lectures at the invitation of IBP Director Professor Xu Tao on May 10th, 2010. The lectures were presided over by Prof. Zhu Yan.

Prof. Craige Montell’s presentation was titled “TRP channels: our windows to the world” in which he discussed scientific significance of TRP channels and latest proceedings in this field. Prof. Denise Montell later gave a lecture and introduced in vivo steering of moving cells expressing photoactivatable Rac in response to light. Both professors briefed the medical school of Johns Hopkins University and sincerely welcomed IBP researchers to explore and participate in cooperative programs and activities in their university. The two illuminating lectures attracted many scientists and graduate students not only from IBP but also from other CAS institutes, some of them raised questions eagerly in the end of the lecture.

Prof. Craig Montell is one of the world leaders in TRP channel research and also a molecular neurobiologist at Johns Hopkins University. His research focuses on the molecular mechanisms underlying sensory signaling. He has published in many scientific journals, such as Neuron, Current Biology, and the Journal of Biological Chemistry. He is a professor both in the department of biological chemistry and Neuroscience at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

Prof. Denise Montell completed her Ph.D. in Neurosciences at Stanford University in 1988. Since 1992 she has been a faculty member in the Department of Biological Chemistry at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where she is currently a Full Professor and Director of the Graduate Program in Biological Chemistry.                   (by Queenie)
