Prof. Kurt Wüthrich, 2002 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry Visited IBP and Delivered the BEI Shizhang Lecture

Author: Update time: 2016-11-25

On Nov 2nd, 2016, Prof. Kurt Wüthrich, 2002 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry, invited by Prof. WANG Jiangyun, visited IBP and gave a BEI Shizhang lecture entitled The Role of Solution NMR in 21st Century Structural Biology.

Prof. Kurt Wüthrich, 2002 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry has his primary appointment at TSRI, with additional activites as Professor of Biophysics at the ETH Zürich in Switzerland and as Distinguished Senior Professor at the iHuman Institute of ShanghaiTech University. At TSRI, he is a member of the Department of Integrative Structural and Computational Biology, the Department of Chemistry, and the Skaggs Institute for Chemical Biology. His specialty is nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy with biological macromolecules in solution. At TSRI, the Wüthrich laboratory pursues investigations of structure—function correlations in opioid receptors and other GPCRs, and studies of the regulation of apoptotic protein isoforms by splicing factors. His research interests are in Biology, structure and function of proteins and nucleic acids; development of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques for macromolecular structure determination in solution and for studies of intermolecular interactions; applications in structural genomics, proteomics and biomedical research.

Prof. Kurt Wüthrich introduced the development of the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) in research of biological macromolecular structure and function method, and presented the research progress of their team. They used nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) to study the structure and function of RNA binding protein and GPCR receptor, and discusses the future direction of structural biology.

The audience posed many interesting questions after the lecture, which were about the uses and the roles of NMR in biology.
