John R. Yates III visited IBP

Prof. John R. Yates III, the international distinguished proteomic expert from the Scripps Research Institute, visited the Institute of Biophysics (IBP), Chinese Academy of Sciences on October 14, 2008 on the invitation of Prof. Fuquan Yang. Prof. Yates gave a wonderful speech entitled ?Driving Biological Discovery Using Quantitative Mass Spectrometry.

The Seminar was hold by Prof. Yang. Prof. Tao Xu, the director of IBP, briefly introduced Prof. Yates to the audiences and then appointed him as an honorary professor of IBP. Prof. Yates accepted the ?Letter of Appointment? from Prof. Xu happily.

Prof. Yates introduced the history of proteomics first and the multiple dimensional protein identification technology (MudPIT) developed in his lab. Then he used some examples and told us how to solve the biological problems using mass spectrometry. The seminar attracted about one hundred of professors and graduate students from IBP, Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology, Institute of Zoology and Peking University.

After the seminar, Prof. Yates continued to discuss with Prof. Chang Chen, Prof. Long Miao, Prof. Jiangyun Wang and Prof. Fuquan Yang and some graduate students.

After lunch, Prof. Yates visited the proteomic platform of IBP and then discussed the trend of the proteomic technology with the teachers and students form proteomic platform. He also answered some questions on proteomic technology and gave some suggestions on the experiment design.

Prof. Yates coming will improve the development of proteomics in IBP and the application of mass spectrometry in biological research.
