Dr. Bruce Stillman, President of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL), USA visited the Institute of Biophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) at the invitation of Dr. Xu, Ruiming, assistant director of IBP in the afternoon of April 9, 2010.

Dr. Li, Jiayang, Vice President of CAS, accompanied by other officials from the Academy’s Bureau of International Co-operation, met Dr. Stillman at IBP and explored collaboration in life science research and training between CSHL, a world renowned scientific institution and CAS, China’s leading academic institution and comprehensive research and development center in natural science, technological science and high-tech innovation. Professor Li introduced the strategic planning and development of life sciences and biotechnology research at CAS. He emphasized that the academy should strengthen academic exchange and cooperation with CSHL and other leading institutions. He pointed out that CSHL had set up an excellent example to the world in training new generation of scientists and CAS has strong interest in collaborating with CSHL in organizing CSH Asia conferences and training courses.

Dr. Stillman was impressed by the rapid development of science and technology in China. He expressed his hope to develop stronger ties with China and CAS. He introduced that CSH Asia will organize conferences and training courses following the CSHL tradition in showcasing merit-based scientific advances in an informal but intensive atmosphere. He also talked about the importance of training young scholars to improve their innovative research ability and scientific writing skills.

During his visit to IBP, Dr. Stillman also delivered a presentation and discussed cell cycle control of chromosome replication and inheritance in eukaryotes. His illuminating presentation attracted many scientists and graduate students.
