On the morning of January 20, 2013, Professor ZHANG Yaping, Vice President of Chinese Academy of Sciences, met Professor Jeffrey A. Bluestone, Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost of the University of California at San Francisco, at the Institute of Biophysics, CAS. Professor Matthias Hebrok, Director of the UCSF Diabetes Center, Professor Xu Ruiming, Director of the Bureau of Life Sciences and Biotechnology, CAS, Professor Cao Jinghua, Deputy Director of the Bureau of International Cooperation, CAS, and other officials and researchers joined the meeting.

Vice-president ZHANG gave a warm welcome to the UCSF delegation and expressed his sincere wish to develop mutually beneficial collaboration. Professor XU then delivered a brief introduction to the CAS, placing emphasis on the biosciences. Professor Bluestone later introduced UCSF. He said that UCSF is the leading public university in biomedical research in the USA and currently has collaborative projects in Beijing, Shanghai and other parts of China. Professor Bluestone expressed his wish to develop high level collaborations with China in basic and clinical research, clinical care, and education. Both sides discussed ways to promote exchange of personnel and develop cooperation. The Chinese side emphasized the importance of strategic planning and funding. Both sides were optimistic that a solid link can be forged between the two institutions in the future.

UCSF is a world-leading biomedical research and health science education center. In the past 15 years alone, three pioneering UCSF researchers have been named Nobel Laureates. The University’s most notable research includes landmark studies on the prevention and treatment of cancer, AIDS, and cardiovascular disease. CAS is the leading national research institution for natural sciences and high technology development in China. Developing bilateral cooperation between UCSF and CAS will no doubt promote the scientific research and development of both institutions, particularly in the biomedical field, providing benefit for both countries and even the whole world.
