Research on Life Science Instruments

Updated: 2020-07-04

During the early period of its establishment, the CAS Institute of Biophysics was involved in the research and development of life science instruments in a move to break the blockade imposed on China by Western countries. The institute became a pioneer in the production of many scientific research facilities such as β radiometric measuring instruments, automatic liquid scintillation spectrometers, fluorescence spectrophotometers, ultracentrifuges, and paramagnetic resonance WDS. These helped guarantee the accomplishment of national missions, filled domestic gaps, and contributed a lot to the country's relevant research. Some of its scientific achievements were bestowed with awards at the National Science Conference in 1978.

The CAS Institute of Biophysics has been engaged in the research and development of key cutting-edge technologies over recent years. With the support of the country and the CAS, the institute has developed several biological imaging technologies, which include correlative imaging of cryogenic super-resolution fluorescence and electron microscopy. For instance, it is the first research institute in the world which has brought into reality the correlative imaging of three-dimensional super-resolution and black electron microscopy of frozen mammalian cells.
