Whilst looking into malaria, which is one of most deadly contagious diseases, the CAS Institute of Biophysics has worked with over 60 research institutes to conduct research and development of artemisinin. During the process, the institute was involved in the measurement of the crystal structure of artemisinin and its absolute configuration, which won it a second-class merit citation at the National Invention Award in 1979.
