Introduction
The Institute of Biophysics (IBP) is one of the first institutes at the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) to accept graduate students. After the first graduate student education system was established in 1955, the Institute admitted two batches of six graduate students successively between 1955 and 1977. After the restoration of the graduate admissions system in 1978, the Institute was listed as one of the first batch of doctoral and master degree-awarding units of the State Council, a pilot unit for adding doctoral supervisors, as well as a key training base for doctoral students of the CAS. Meanwhile, Xu Gongqiao, the first doctor of biology (and also the first female doctor educated domestically) graduated from the Institute of Biophysics and acquired her doctorate of science.
The Institute sets three first-level disciplines include biology, psychology and preclinical medicine. It also has seven doctoral training points of secondary-level disciplines - biochemistry and molecular biology, biophysics, cognitive neuroscience, neurobiology, cell biology, bioinformatics and immunology - and eight masters training points of secondary-level disciplines such as biology and medicine, biochemistry and molecular biology, biophysics, cognitive neuroscience, neurobiology, cell biology, bioinformatics and immunology.
In terms of supervisor team establishment, IBP has a distinguished team of researchers with profound academic achievements who are renowned both internationally and domestically. They educate large numbers of excellent life sciences scientists, entrepreneurs and young pace-setters. Three of the graduates have already become academicians of CAS.
IBP insisted on the goal of educating high-level and high-quality innovative and entrepreneurial talents, and strictly controls every education cycle of its graduates. It is gradually reforming and innovating in terms of admission promotion, supervisor selection, mutual selection between teachers and students, course learning, appraisal and assessment, academic atmosphere establishment, dissertation requirements, graduate students' ideological education and other education cycles, ensuring a high quality of education. Six students from the IBP have won the National (Top 100) Excellent Doctoral Dissertation of China.
In 2014, IBP led in the establishment of the College of Life Sciences, the largest school of foundation studies in the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences. The college gathers the best core talents and resources in life science research within Beijing; it establishes an integration platform of science and education; it supports top tier undergraduate and graduate education with excellent scientific research teams; and it educates future elite talents in the life science field.
The Institute steadily improves education and teaching levels through a series of measures, including improvement of education plans, teaching staff training, education facility establishment, research organization and teaching management. In the fourth round of national discipline assessments organized by the Ministry of Education of China in 2016, the first-level discipline of biology in the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences acquired an excellent grade of A++, ranking among the top 2 percent in biology in China.
In the future, IBP will insist on fostering the talents of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, fully implementing education principles to cultivate a young generation with ideals, talents and responsibilities, consistently strive to educate first class international science and technology talents, and consistently contribute to the development of the country's science and education development and the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
