Prof. ZHUANG Xiaowei Visited IBP and Delivered the BEI Shizhang Lecture

Updated: 2016-06-06

On June 1, 2016, invited by Prof. XU Tao, the Director General of IBP, Prof. ZHUANG Xiaowei, who is the Foreign Member of Chinese Academy of Sciences, visited IBP and delivered the BEI Shizhang Lecture.

After sincerely congratulating to Prof. ZHUANG Xiaowei’s election as the Foreign Member of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Prof. XU Ruiming, Deputy Director General of IBP, introduced IBP to her, including the history, teams, research divisions, R&D funds, and achievements.

Then, Prof. ZHUANG Xiaowei delivered the BEI Shizhang Lecture entitled Illuminating biology at the nanoscale with single-molecule and super-resolution fluorescence microscopy. She presented the concept and technological advances of stochastic optical reconstruction microscopy (STORM), as well as some of the recent biological discoveries enabled by STORM, which is a super-resolution fluorescence microscopy method developed by her team. She also described a new single-cell transcriptome imaging method – multiplexed error-robust fluorescent in situ hybridization (MERFISH), which allows numerous RNA species to be imaged and quantified in single cells. Her rewarding lecture broadened the horizon of the audience.

Lastly, she was showed around Center for Biological Imaging, Instrument Development  Center for Lifescience, the labs from State Key Laboratory of Brain & Cognitive Sciences, and from National Laboratory of Biomacromolecules, knowing more about IBP’s biological imaging instruments, optical imaging technique development and application, and research achievements in molecular and cellular mechanism of synaptic vesicle release as well as genetically encoded probes and small molecular chemical probes.
